FAQs

Why do you soak sweet potatoes in water before air frying? ›

Some recipes call for soaking the sweet potatoes in water before cooking them to help remove some of the starch and make them more crispy but have found that this step isn't necessary for sweet potatoes as they don't have as much starch as regular potatoes.

How long does sweet potato go in the air fryer? ›

Soft and fluffy sweet potatoes baked in the air fryer in just 30 minutes. Perfect for a quick lunch or dinner. No need to put your oven on to make soft and creamy baked sweet potatoes. Just pop them in your air fryer and they are ready to serve in half an hour.

Why are my sweet potatoes not crispy in air fryer? ›

A couple of reasons! It could be that the temperature of your fryer was too low, that you used too much oil, or that you crammed too many fries into one batch. Preheating before adding sweet potato fries to the air fryer also guarantees the crispiest results.

Why soak potatoes before air frying? ›

While it may seem like a pain, soaking the potatoes in hot water for 10 minutes prior to cooking them in the air fryer is essential. The water removes excess starch, allowing the fries to be their crispiest. Instead of soaking them in large bowl of cold water, I like to use hot water to cook the potatoes slightly.

What happens if you don t rinse potatoes before putting in to air fryer? ›

Soaking potatoes in cold water can help release some of their starch and yield a crispy fry. That being said, I find it is not necessary when using the air fryer as the air gets hot enough to get them crispy. I have never soaked my potatoes and we get crispy fries all the time. If you want to try it, feel free to.

What happens if you don't soak potatoes before frying? ›

Soaking potatoes in water helps remove excess starch. Excess starch can inhibit the potatoes from cooking evenly as well as creating a gummy or sticky texture on the outside of your potatoes. Cold water is used because hot water would react with the starch activating it, making it harder to separate from the potatoes.

Why do sweet potatoes turn black in air fryer? ›

Why do my air fryer sweet potato fries turn black? Sweet potatoes contain a higher concentration of sugar than standard potatoes, and caramelize as they cook in the air fryer. If you find the fries are darkening too quickly or deeply, cook at a lower temperature, or for a shorter period of time.

Why are sweet potatoes soggy in air fryer? ›

Recipe Tips and Tricks

To help the flavor pop, sprinkle the fries with a pinch of additional kosher salt immediately after removing them from the air fryer. Banish Soggy Sweet Potato Fries. If your air fryer fries are soggy, it is likely because you over-crowded them in the basket.

Can you put tin foil in an air fryer? ›

The great news about air fryers is that you can use foil along with parchment paper to cook your food in an air fryer. Just remember that if it's safe and effective to use in a conventional oven, it will work just fine in an air fryer.

How much heat and time should you put a sweet potato in an air fryer? ›

Sweet potatoes take 40 to 50 minutes to bake in the air fryer at 370 degrees F, compared to 50 to 65 minutes (or longer) in the oven (check out How to Bake a Sweet Potato). Use that time to whip up a fast, easy main like Pan Fried Chicken Breast.

Why do you soak sweet potatoes before baking? ›

The cold water bath helps rinse the starch off the sweet potatoes so they're a bit more crispy. That said, if you do not have the time, you can still get crispy baked sweet potato fries by using high heat and a little drizzle of olive oil.

Should I soak my sweet potatoes before air frying? ›

In my experience, soaking sweet potatoes doesn't make a huge difference in how crispy they turn out, so I personally skip this step to save myself the extra time and effort. To make crispier sweet potatoes, you can try my Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries, which have a light coating that help them crisp up.

How do I keep potatoes from sticking in my air fryer? ›

I recommend using oil because it adds flavor and the air fryer still needs a touch of oil to crisp the potatoes. It also keeps the potatoes from sticking to the air fryer rack.

Can I use frozen fries in an air fryer? ›

Set your air fryer to around 185°C (365°F) and then place your frozen fries into the air fryer basket. Make sure to spread them out evenly, and try to keep them in a single layer. Cook the frozen fries for around 20 minutes, making sure to shake the basket every five minutes.

What does soaking sweet potatoes in water do? ›

TIPS & TRICKS to Make this Recipe: The main secrets to achieving that incredible crispy texture, is to soak the cut sweet potatoes in cold water for at least 30 minutes. This helps remove the starch from the sweet potatoes so they´re not limp & soggy.

Why does soaking potatoes in water make them crispy? ›

Soaking the sliced potatoes in water helps to draw out some of the starch from the middle of the potato, resulting in a sturdier, crispier French fry.
